Diatomaceous Earth for our Pets
Why we use Zeally Herbs Sweep and Bind Powder for our Pets and Why You Might Want To, Too!
As pet owners, we constantly seek safe and effective ways to support the health and well-being of our pets. One natural supplement that has gained considerable attention in recent years, and which is contained in our Gut Sweep and Bind Powder is Diatomaceous Earth (DE)—a fine, powdery substance derived from the fossilised remains of microscopic aquatic organisms called diatoms. While it may sound unconventional at first, quality food-grade Diatomaceous Earth has shown promising benefits for both external and internal pet health.
We encourage the use of Diatomaceous Earth via our incredible Gut Sweep and Bind Powder for humans! But its actually so beneficial for our pets also. So, if you’ve been wondering whether DE is just hype or actually helpful for pets, here’s what we have learned from personal experience.
What Is Diatomaceous Earth, Anyway?
DE is a naturally occurring substance made from the fossilized remains of tiny aquatic organisms called diatoms. It’s rich in silica and has microscopic sharp edges (don’t worry—they’re not sharp in a dangerous way to pets or people). When used correctly, high quality food-grade DE such as Zeally Herbs, is totally safe and can be a game-changer for pets. (Key note! ALWAYS ensure its food grade/ human consumption grade DE when providing to pets, as not all DE is created equal and some DE made for the home is not safe for consumption)
The Benefits for our Pets
1. Natural Flea & Parasite Control
One of the most common uses of DE in pet care is for its ability to help manage fleas and other external parasites. When lightly dusted onto your pet’s coat and bedding (preferably outdoors or in a well-ventilated area), the fine particles can help dehydrate and eliminate pests such as fleas, ticks, and mites—without the use of chemical treatments. We sprinkle it on our dog’s coat (outside, to avoid inhaling the dust) and gently work it into the fur.
Additionally, when administered in small, carefully measured doses in food, Zeally Herbs Gut Sweep and Bind Powder (DE) may assist in reducing internal parasites such as roundworms and hookworms. It is indicated to work by mechanically disrupting the outer layer of these organisms in the digestive tract, leading to their eventual elimination. My vet was open to it in small doses, and since starting, I’ve noticed fewer issues with worms—and my pup’s stool has been consistently healthy. Its always important to ensure you provide your pup with plenty of fresh drinking water when using, as the powder utilises an absorption effect to sweep and bind any parasites from the system, which can lead to an increased need for water.
Its important to note here to only ever use a quality food grade Diatomaceous Earth for pets and never one for household use, as these are not safe for consumption by humans or pets.
2. Improved Digestion
Many pet owners have observed improvements in their animals’ digestive health after incorporating small amounts of DE into their diets. Benefits may include reduced gas, more regular bowel movements, and overall gastrointestinal comfort. The absorbent nature of DE is thought to help bind and remove toxins, promoting a healthier gut environment. When we started adding a small amount of DE to our pups food (dosages based on weight are listed on the Sweep and Bind Product Page), we noted less gas and healthier poop.
3. Healthier Coat & Skin
Regular use of Sweep and Bind Powder (DE) has been associated with shinier coats and healthier skin in pets. This may be attributed to the trace minerals present in DE, particularly silica, which is known to support hair and skin health. Pets with dry, itchy, or flaky skin may benefit from both topical and dietary applications.
After a couple of weeks, we noted our dog’s fur was noticeably shinier and softer. DE being incredibly rich in silica, is known to improve coat, skin and nails - in humans and pets! (minus the coat for humans!)
A Few Tips Before You Start
- Always use food-grade DE. I can’t stress this enough. Zeally Herbs Gut Sweep and Bind Powder is incredible quality and sold for human consumption.
- Start slow. Introduce it gradually to avoid upsetting your pet’s stomach. And always offer fresh drinking water.
- Use a dust mask if you're applying it externally—it's a fine powder and not great to inhale.
- Talk to your vet. Mine was supportive and helped me decide on a safe amount for each pet.
Final Thoughts
We at Zeally Herbs aren’t big on trends, opting for holistic and proven options for natural remedies. But Diatomaceous Earth turned out to be one of those simple, natural things that actually works. It’s affordable, versatile, and helpful during flea season and deworming cycles.
If your pets are anything like mine—beloved, a little spoiled, and deserving of the best—you might want to give DE a try. Just start slow, keep it high quality and food-grade, and see how they respond. You might be surprised by how something so simple can make such a difference.
