Common Types of Parasites
A parasite is an organism that lives in or on another organism (the host) and survives by taking nutrients from it, often causing harm.
There are three main classes of parasites that can cause disease in humans: protozoa, helminths, and ectoparasites. Protozoa and helminths usually infect the gastrointestinal tract, while ectoparasites, such as lice and mites, live on the skin or hair and can attach to or burrow into the skin for long periods of time.
Protozoa are tiny, single-celled parasites that live mainly in the intestines and spread through contaminated food or water or poor hand hygiene.
In Australia, very common examples include Giardia, Cryptosporidium, Blastocystis hominis, and Dientamoeba fragilis.
These parasites can cause diarrhea, stomach cramps, bloating, gas, nausea, fatigue, and weight loss, although some people may carry them without symptoms. Infections can be short-term or become chronic if not treated.
Helminths are large, worm-like parasites that live inside the body, most commonly in the intestines.
