Evidence Action is a nonprofit focused on scaling programs that are strongly evidence based and cost effective, Deworm the World is one of their flagship initiatives.

Deworm the World supports government run deworming programs, using schools and community systems to reach kids at scale, reliably, and repeatedly.

Why deworming matters

In many low income settings, soil transmitted worms are common where sanitation and clean water access are limited. Infected children can have abdominal symptoms, reduced appetite, and iron deficiency anaemia, which can contribute to tiredness, poor growth, and missed school. The main goal of school based deworming is to reduce the worm burden in the community so fewer children reach heavy infections, which are the most harmful. When kids feel better and miss fewer days, they are more likely to stay in school consistently, which matters because regular attendance is closely linked to learning progress and long term opportunities.

We support Evidence Action because Deworm the World helps governments run these programs at scale through schools, with planning, training, monitoring, and reporting so treatment reaches large numbers of children consistently, not as a one off campaign.

What “Deworm the World” actually does

Deworm the World focuses on delivery through government systems, mainly school based programs. Instead of running a stand alone campaign, they provide technical support to help governments design, run, and improve deworming programs using existing infrastructure.

This support includes program planning, training for delivery teams, monitoring, and reporting, all aimed at making sure treatments reach the children they are intended to reach.

Evidence Action reports that since 2014, Deworm the World has helped deliver over 2 billion deworming treatments, at an average cost of under USD $0.50 per treatment, working with government partners in countries including India, Pakistan, Nigeria, Kenya, and Malawi
